Abstract A method to solve the Laplace-equation using the finite difference method and following relaxation is given. On the basis of this method and by means of the program SCAPOT it is possible to calculate the electrostatic potential distribution defined by any electrodes, for example. The calculated potential distribution is the starting point for the calculation of the field strength at the surface of the field-producing electrodes (program FELDS) and the trajectory calculation of relativistic charged particles (program BAHN).
