National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Benzotrifuroxan (BTF) is CO-balanced, hydrogen-free explosive that is sensitive to exploding bridgewire initiation. It has performance parameters equivalent to those of HMX-based explosives, but with a different isentrope. BTF is a chemically reactive material that forms compounds with electron-donating substrates. The procedures normally used to prepare BTF result in low levels of trinitrotriazidbenzene (TNTAB) that degrade its already limited thermal stability. However, BTF can be purified by recrystallization and can then be safely handled. (ERA citation 03:026846)
