Abstract The workplace environment profoundly affects workers' health. Each day 137 individuals die from work-related diseases and 16 workers die from injuries on the job. Every five seconds a worker is injured. Every 10 seconds a worker is temporarily or permanently disabled. In 1994, occupational injuries cost $121 billion in lost wages, productivity, and health care costs. The same year, employers reported 6.3 million work injuries and 515,000 cases of occupational illness.
