Abstract The main objective of the work was to clarify the role of fiber bonding in paper and to find new possibilities of improving paper properties by affecting fiber bonding. The main objective was sub-divided into six objectives which were to: analyze the importance of fiber bonding as one key parameter affecting the paper properties; study the role of fiber bonding in the load-elongation behavior of paper; compare methods of measuring the strength of fiber bonds in paper and to analyze factors affecting the test results; evaluate several possibilities for improving the strength of fiber networks and elucidate the mechanisms causing the improvement (The effect of lignin removal, alkaline treatment, wet pressing, strength additives and fines on fiber bonding and paper strength were evaluated); analyze the role of fiber bonding and other factors affecting the strength of pulp blends; and study the possibilities of reducing the grammage of paper by affecting the fiber bonding.
