Abstract In this issue (Spring), an editorial discussed hazards faced by farmers and their families today. Agricultural workers and their families experience a disproportionate share of injuries and diseases associated with numerous chemical, biological, and physical hazards, as well as excess mortality. For migrant and seasonal workers there are additional hazards. The editorial stressed the need for change and for increasing the safety steps taken for the American farmer. NIOSH has expanded its efforts to develop a comprehensive research based intervention program to reduce injury and disease among agricultural workers and their families. The system included national surveillance, regional centers for agricultural safety and health research, and a national network of land grant university programs to deliver prevention programs.
