Abstract |
Malden Mills, Inc., Lawrence, Massachusetts was the site of an occupational health and safety survey. The facility has four divisions: fur, flock, cloth, woven. Operations included dyeing, finishing, blending, carding, and knitting. The Malden Mills facility produced about 1 million yards of finished piece goods per week, and employed 2,338 workers of whom 1,930 were hourly. Management had demonstrated support for a projected safety and health program at the site. The company has a sound level meter and appropriate calibrator and readings have been taken in the past, but not a regular basis. When accidents occurred they were reviewed by supervisor to prevent recurrence. All lost time accidents were reviewed. A general practitioner was available on a part time basis. Each employee received a preplacement physical examination, including urinalysis and pulmonary function tests. A survey of operations was carried out and specific observations were reported. |
