Abstract |
This report summarizes the current approaches to consideration of earthquakes in the design and construction of transit facilities. The document provides an overview of earthquakes, the regions in which they are likely to occur, and their potential impacts. It reviews current seismic design standards, including the Uniform Building Code of the International Conference of Building Officials and the Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. It then reviews practices and innovative approaches associated with transit aerial structures, underground structures, and maintenance facilities, including examples and discussion of economic factors. |
