Abstract |
The training course manual was developed to provide an introduction to nonionizing radiation, including both hazards and controls. Microwaves, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared and laser radiation were included. Electromagnetic fundamentals were reviewed, including the electromagnetic spectrum, waves and particle concepts, the photon concept, photoelectric effect, black body spectrum, production of electromagnetic radiation in atoms and molecules, electromagnetic radiation interactions and processes, and electromagnetic quantities and units. The microwave lesson plan provided an introduction to microwaves and then discussed various sources of microwave radiation, biological effects, microwave monitoring equipment, and control of microwave hazards. The lesson plan concerning ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation discussed the fundamentals of the radiation, biological effects and hazards, standards and laws which regulate exposures, evaluation of hazards, and protection and control steps to be taken. |
