Abstract The purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health training center at the University of North Carolina was to develop a regional need for physicians and health professionals with training and expertise in the areas of Occupational and Enviroinmental Medicine. The Occupational Medicine program (at Duke) offered a 2 year residency program which integrated the academic and practical years of training. Significant changes were made during the 3 years of the program, including the establishing of an interdepartmental arrangement whereby Epidemiology students may obtain a PhD degree with specialization in Occupational Health Nursing. Also, Industrial Hygiene reduced the number of Master's students and increased PhD enrollment, while simultaneously expanding the options available for Masters students. Occupational Medicine initiated a post residency research training program and initiated an interdisciplinary training course where students work on industrial projects.
