Abstract This manual provided the information and course material for the University of Washington annual 1 day refresher on health and safety for hazardous waste site investigation personnel who have taken the 40 hour course. The program included a hazardous waste site investigation case study which discussed hazard recognition, levels of protection, air monitoring instruments, site investigation, and emergency response. Also included in the study program were site investigation and characterization, specifically focusing on work zones, site safety and health plans, and decontamination. New issues in the industry were discussed. Under the hazard recognition section were included legislation governinig hazardous waste site operations, medical surveillance, engineering controls, work practices, and the use of personal protection equipment of employees, monitoring, handling of drums and containers. The levels of protection section discussed equipment, protection required, when protection should be used, and limiting criteria for each of several levels of protection requirements.
