Abstract |
This one day course was designed to educate the participants in the field of hazardous materials transportation. The definitions of hazardous materials are reviewed from the point of view of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Proper container determination is considered. Nine hazard classes are noted including explosive materials, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidizers, poisonous materials, radioactive materials, corrosive materials and miscellaneous hazardous materials. Labeling and placarding, including the use of the Hazardous Materials Table, identifying placards, and UN numbers, are discussed. Shipping documents including the Bill of Lading and the Hazardous Waste Manifests are reviewed. Choosing a proper shipping description for hazardous material and hazardous wastes is discussed. Carrier preparation is reviewed and spill prevention and cleanup discussed. Consideration of transporter responsibilities and liabilities concludes the course work. |
