Abstract |
The performance of slot hoods to exhaust vapor degreasers was investigated, and a comparison was made of predicted and measured capture efficiencies. Sixteen degreasers were studied in facilities located in the Chicago area. The capture efficiency of the hoods was measured, along with the direction and magnitude of cross drafts in the vicinity of the local exhaust hood. A comparison was then made of field measurements with existing design recommendations. Measured cross drafts ranged from near 0 to more than 120 feet per minute. Measured workspace emission rates ranged from near 0 to 211 grams/minute. Measured duct emission rates ranged from near 0 to 258 grams/minute. Measured capture efficiencies ranged from 0.09 to 1.00. Predicted capture efficiencies ranged from 0.52 to 0.86. The measured hood flow rates ranged from 36% to 349% of the recommended flow rate of 50 cubic feet per minute/square foot. For some conditions the recommended flow rate appeared to be adequate, but it was inadequate for others. |
