Abstract Minnesota's mineral production reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1991, valued at about $1.3 billion, represented the lowest value reported for the State since 1988. A drop in production of more than 12% from that of the previous year was a reflection of decreased sales reported in nearly all of the State's mineral commodities. Lime, clays, and gemstones were the only mineral commodities with reported increases in production and sales during the year. Reduced sales dropped Minnesota from sixth to seventh rank nationally in the value of nonfuel mineral production. The State contributed about 4.2% of the total U.S. mineral value in 1991.
