Abstract Mirex is chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide used in the United States for control of imported fire ants. The only U.S. bait formulation plant is operated by the State Mississippi. The State Health Officer requested NIOSH to provide technical consultants to evaluate the bait formulation facility from a health and safety standpoint and to make appropriate recommendations to protect the safety and health of the employees. There is insufficient human exposure, medical, and epidemiological data on mirex to state conclusively its adverse health effects on humans. Einse the beginning of the NIOSH evaluation, the facility has implemented a number of improvements, such as engineering controls, better housekeeping, and improved personal protective equipment. These changes have greatly reduced the exposure of employees to airborne mirex.
