National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Wind Profiler Assessment Report and Recommendations for Future Use, 1987-1994.

PB95131009

Publication Date 1994
Page Count 150
Abstract The National Weather Service (NWS) and the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) have been engaged in the design, deployment, and assessment of the Wind Profiler Demonstration Network (WPDN) in the central part of the U.S. for the last decade. Much has been learned from these experiences. The assessment program was designed and implemented to answer key questions about the use of wind profiler data in NWS operations, data quality and reliability, and network design, communications, and maintenance. The meteorological assessment demonstrates that wind profiler data lead to significant positive benefits to a broad spectrum of NWS forecasts and warnings. Engineering assessment results indicate that the performance of the WPDN radars exceeds expectations with respect to the quality and range of the wind data. This report documents the wide acceptance of wind profiler data with its proven benefits in forecasting and the growth of wind profiling into a mature technology.
