Abstract As part of the Cement Workers Morbidity Study, an industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Northwestern States Cement facility in Mason City, Iowa. Environmental sampling was undertaken to determine the presence and concentration of various contaminants. For most jobs at the site the respirable and total dust levels were below the recommended exposure levels. Four samples from a mill helper, a laborer, and two dust collectors exceeded the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommended level for respirable nuisance particulate. Two samples from a primary crusher operator and a repairman exceeded levels for nuisance dust. Three samples exceeded levels for respirable quartz (14808607). The authors recommend measures to reduced exposures, including a routine surveillance program, engineering controls, ventilation design, improved clean up operations, and the use of personal protective equipment.
