Abstract Environmental sampling was conducted at the Lehigh Cement Company in Cementon, New York as part of an investigation of the effects of exposures at Portland cement facilities. Personal respirable dust samples were collected for a subset of workers. Area total dust samples were collected throughout the facility. Bulk material samples were analyzed. Dust levels were relatively low. Only three personal samples out of 65 exceeded the nuisance dust standards. Detectable amounts of quartz (14808607) were found in 17% of respirable dust samples. Quartz exposures apparently occurred only in raw materials handling areas. No asbestos was found in the raw materials. The authors recommend that engineering controls be implemented and maintained at all times. Jobs of particular concern included those using the conveyors for transferring cement and those in the priamry and secondary crushing pits and clinker cooler pits. Improved clean up procedures emphasizing the use of personal protective equipment were also suggested.
