National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The radiolytic and photolytic decomposition of IO(4) ion in aqueous solution at natural pH was studied. The radiation chemical yield (G-value) and the (phi-value) for the disappearance of IO(4) ion and for the formation of IO(3) ion and O2, were determined in argon saturated, N2O saturated solution and in the presence of formate ion. The theoretically calculated G-values on the basis of the proposed mechanism for the radiolytic decomposition of IO4 ion are in good agreement with the experimentally determined values.
