National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Rock Stress Determinations from Overcoring: An Overview.

PB94108826

Publication Date 1993
Page Count 182
Abstract The bulletin describes the U.S. Bureau of Mines three-component borehole deformation gage and the overcoring techniques used in rock stress determination. Thirty years of experience with the borehole gage has shown that it is an accurate instrument for measuring deformation of a borehole. The theoretical basis relating the deformation of a borehole to the in situ field stress is presented. Rock anisotropy, variation of topography on the stress field, and nonlinearity of the rock can be accounted for in calculating the in situ state of stress. A comparison of alternative methods for determining the absolute in situ field stress is also presented.
