National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Development of Continuous Isocyanates Monitor.

Abstract The main purpose of the project was to demonstrate the technical feasibility of an innovative chemiluminescent technique for the selective detection of isocyanate species in air at levels as low as 0.02 parts per million (ppm). The analysis was based on the generation of a reactive stream of oxygen atoms which is then combined with the air stream being sampled to produce activated CNO species from any isocyanates present. The activated CNO species then decay to ground state species with the emission of light which is detected and quantified as a measure of the amount of isocyanate in the original air sample. The monitor provided nonspecific analysis of isocyanate species and therefore served as a total isocyanates monitor rather than as a monitor of individual isocyanate species in air. The preferred source of reactive oxygen for the monitor was high purity oxygen, rather than the originally proposed room air. Chemical interferant effects were minimal for typical organic compounds including aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and ketones and inorganic species.
