Abstract A transcript was presented of the proceedings of the prerulemaking technical conference held in Morgantown, West Virginia, January 9-11, 1991, concerning the assessment of industrial respirator performance. The speakers for the meeting addressed the following issues: NIOSH respirator workplace performance research; future directions of respirator performance assessment; project firesmoke, a workplace evaluation of self contained breathing apparatus; workplace protection factor study of half facepiece particulate air purifying respirators at two lead acid battery manufacturing facilities; a model for correcting workplace protection factors for pulmonary deposition and other effects; measurement of respirator performance; an objective method for setting assigned protection factors; determining workplace protection factors for negative pressure elastomeric and disposable half mask air purifying respirators; respirator usage at foundry operations and aircraft painting facilities; results from eleven workplace tests; problems encountered during workplace testing; feasibility of workplace testing and alternatives; respirators used during asbestos (1332214) removal; evaluation of respirator fit; limitations of current studies; breath analysis; simulated workplace testing of respirators; specific chemical challenges; and laboratory face fit testing.
