Abstract |
A simple and inexpensive sampling method was described for the determination of concentrations of asbestos (1332214) dust in the air for comparison with established hygiene limits. The results obtained were reproducible. The method used disposable plastic membrane filter holders, preloaded with membrane filters. These membrane filters may be made transparent and the asbestos fibers then counted with a phase contrast microscopy at 430X or 400X. The Asbestosis Research Council in Great Britain has used the method as has the United States Public Health Service. This was also the method specified in the proposed change for asbestos in the 1968 Threshold Limit Values of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The details of the equipment needed and the procedure to be followed if one is to obtain reproducible results were described. |
