Abstract A survey was conducted at Lowenstein Dyes and Cosmetics to observe the compounding and control measures taken during the manufacture of hair and fur dyes containing aromatic amino compounds. Lowenstein Dyes and Cosmetics was located in Brooklyn, New York, and was founded in 1897. It was a compounder and wholesale distributor of both acid and oxidative dyes to the fur and cosmetics industry. Engineering controls and the general facility housekeeping appeared good. All production workers in potentially dusty job areas wore approved half face respirators with organic vapor dust canisters. Respirators were kept in closed containers when not in use. Elbow length rubber gloves were also available. No formal industrial hygiene program existed although a basic safety program was maintained by management.
