NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Testimony on Video Display Terminals by J. D. Millar on May 15, 1984.

PB90179110

Publication Date 1984
Page Count 14
Abstract The testimony concerned the work of NIOSH in the field of worker health relating to exposure to video display units. In general the research has indicated that the computer revolution has produced impressively few problems for worker health considering the scope of the technological change. Even so, the perception that video display units are harmful was widespread, causing continuing doubts. The questions concerning the video display unit have included levels of radiation, psychological stress and musculoskeletal strain, and effects on reproductive function. Research had indicated that video display units were a source of dangerous radiation, that there was some evidence that the units can increase both physical and emotional stress but that there are ways these side effects can be reduced, and that no physiologic mechanism has been advanced whereby use of video display terminals could impair reproductive function. A major epidemiologic study has been designed to definitively answer questions concerning effects on reproductive function.
