National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Faceseal Leak Identification on Half-Mask Respirators.

Abstract The location and shape of respirator faceseal leak sites were identified by the deposition of a fluorescent tracer. Faceseal leak sites on a respirator mounted on a mannequin and worn by human subjects were identified by deposition of the tracer aerosol and subsequent observation under longwave ultraviolet lighting. Test parameters were identified for the optimal definition of leaks. Photographic techniques were also developed to document the identified leak sites. Of the 73 subjects participating in the study, ten had prior experience with respirators on the job. A total of 110 leaks were observed on the 73 subjects. When more than one leak occurred on the same subject, the shape of one was found to be independent of the other leak. Only nose width was found to be significantly different in the comparisons of the single leak subsets of nose only, cheek only, and chin only. Nose width was significantly different in four of the eight comparisons. Significant differences in three sets of comparisons were found for biectoorbitale breadth, bizygomatic breadth, bigonial breadth, bitragion/menton arc, and bitragion/subnasale arc. Face length was found to be significant only in two comparisons, and lip width was not significant in any of the comparisons.
