Abstract |
Study of the clinical and metabolic aspects of manganese poisoning findings include: levodopa is capable of correcting symptoms of extrapyramidal damage induced by manganese; susceptibility to manganese poisoning is linked to increased intestinal absorption of manganese in anemic individuals, with a positive correlation demonstrated for iron and manganese absorption; parallel pathophysiology is found between manganese poisoning and Parkinson's disease. Other areas of investigation include: long term treatment of manganic patients, mechanism for intermittent loss of control and involuntary movements induced by levodopa, and study of interaction of manganese and dopa and permeability of blood brain barrier to manganese. |
