Publication Date 1981

Abstract The document contains three reports which deal with the possible health issues among operators of video display terminals (VDT). The papers discuss health complaints and job stress among video display operations, evaluate work station design factors in VDT operations, and survey the radiation and industrial hygiene concerns in VDT operations. In the first paper a questionnaire approach was used to gather data concerning working conditions, job stress factors, health complaints and psychological mood states among VDT operators. The second study included an evaluation on site at five establishments using VDTs to assess current practices with respect to workstation design. A number of design problems were found, including excessive keyboard heights, and screen positioning which would require excessive inclination of the head and neck for screen viewing. The results of the radiation study indicated the levels of x-rays and electromagnetic radiation emitted by a VDT were very low compared to current occupational standards.
