Low Back Injuries among Nursing Personnel: An Annotated Bibliography.

PB89186498

Publication Date 1987
Page Count 126
Abstract The annotated bibliography has been prepared on research concerning low back injuries among nursing personnel. It included abstracts of 90 documents, including four articles that provide a synthesis of multiple studies on a particular issue, 12 state of the art reviews, and 74 articles that report original research on the topic. The studies reported were summarized in terms of five categories: type of investigation, workers studied, measurement methods, findings about suspected risk factors, and findings about programs for reducing risk. There were four major types of investigations including cross sectional surveys, longitudinal studies, laboratory experiments, and field studies. One subject area in which there was very little research was home health care nursing. Measurement methods employed included surveys or consulting employer records of injuries and compensation claims. Inconsistent results were obtained by studies on risk factors; personal factors such as age and gender were the most widely studied. Approaches for reducing the risk have included training in patient handling and/or body mechanics.
