Walk-Through Survey Report: Courtney and Company, Inc., Texas City, Texas,

PB89137954

Publication Date 1982
Personal Author Donaldson, H. M.
Page Count 8
Abstract A walk-through survey was conducted at Courtney and Company, Inc. (SIC-1721), Texas City, Texas to observe abrasive blasting practices involving the use of silica (14808607) sand and copper slag for the purpose of planning a future industrial hygiene evaluation of this site. Sampling feasibility was determined by placing a filter cassette and cyclone assembly operated by a personal pump under the workers' supplied air hood. One phase of the operations conducted at this site included the maintenance of both the inner and outer surfaces of large steel petrochemical storage tanks, process piping, and related equipment. The removal of rust and old paint was accomplished by abrasive blasting of the surface. Silica sand was used at away work sites and copper slag was the abrasive agent used when cleaning equipment at the home site. Employees appeared to be following the safety standards set up by their employer. An employee who was observed during a blasting operation was using earplugs and a supplied air sand blasting helmet along with a disposable type respirator. The employee performing a spray painting operation wore a twin cartridge half mask respirator. The author concludes that this would be a satisfactory facility to include in an in-depth study of a small abrasive blasting yard.
