| Abstract |
The Bureau of Mines assessed the direct costs to the US which would result from the prohibition of strategic and critical material imports from South Africa under the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, Minerals included in the analyses are: platinum, palladium, rhodium, chromium, manganese, vanadium, titanium, and cobalt. The findings of the analysis products; direct economic costs to us of $1.85 billion per year; insufficient alternative world sources to South Africa to meet U.S. demand for platinum and rhodium; expansion of domestic platinum group metal mining and secondary production; and, increased dependence on Soviet Union for the platinum group metals should the embargo decision be made. |
