Publication Date 1976

Abstract A walk through survey was made at the Champion International Paper Company, Canton, North Carolina, to determine the feasibility of including the facility in the Sulfate and Sulfuric Acid Mist Project. During the pulping operation wood chips were chemically treated with caustic-soda and sodium-sulfide for 2.5 hours under pressure. The pulp was held in blow pits following its removal from the digestors. Later the raw pulp was washed, screened, bleached and sent to the paper manufacturing operation. There were possible exposures to the following hazardous materials: sulfur-dioxide (7446095), chlorine (7782505), methyl-mercaptan (74931), thiosulfates, asbestos (1332214), and wood dust. The company offered the following protective equipment to the workers: clothing, glasses, and respirators. There were facilities for showering and changing clothes. Continuous improvements have been made over the years in ventilation and recovery systems. Housekeeping appeared to be good in the areas visited in the survey. Exposures to sulfates and sulfuric-acid (7664939) mists are not sufficient to include the facility in the Project.
