Abstract The Bureau of Mines human factors research program is directed toward reducing accidents and improving the overall efficiency of the person-machine environment interface found in surface and underground mines. The focus of the human factors program is to insure that sound knowledge is available concerning human capabilities and limitations, and that this knowledge is applied to the design of mining equipment, work tasks, and management procedures. The papers presented in these proceedings summarize some of the recent Bureau research in human factors. The papers focus on two broad areas: human resource issues and human engineering of equipment, tools, and work procedures found in mines.
