Abstract Design and establishment of a thinning experiment in stands of birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh, and Betula pendula Roth) established in spruce (Picea abies(L.)Karst.) regenerations is described. The experiment consists of seven treatments and is located on good sites in South and Middle Sweden. The accessible amount of wood after 20-30 years varies between 50 m to 120 m, depending on thinning method and site characteristics.
