Abstract |
The proceedings of a symposium on hazard control in the pesticide formulating and manufacturing industries sponsored by NIOSH on December 1980 are presented. The purpose of the symposium was to present technical information to improve the workplace environment, to provide opportunity for exchange of ideas among industrial, labor, and governmental sectors, and to assist in the implementation of control technology. Assessments of the pesticide industry and engineering controls of health hazards are presented. Topics discussed include factory design and layout, materials handling and transfer, blending, formulating and packaging of liquids and solids, and emission controls. Non engineering hazard control procedures are reviewed. These include implementation of good work practices through education and training, the role of protective clothing in exposure control, basic principles of respiratory protection, general principles of worker exposure monitoring, principles of emissions monitoring, medical monitoring, and financial assistance to small businesses. The symposium concluded that knowledge of control technology components is useful only to the extent that implementation occurs. |
