Abstract |
A walk through survey of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (SIC-2822), Beaumont, Texas, was conducted on November 12, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to determine the feasibility of including the facility in an in depth survey of 1,3-butadiene (106990) exposure. The facility produced polybutadiene rubber using a solution polymerization process. The facility maintained personnel records on current and terminated employees. It currently had records on approximately 700 employees. The company had conducted industrial hygiene sampling for 1,3-butadiene since 1978. The mean time weighted average exposure for all job categories in 1984 was 1.5 parts per million (ppm). The mean of the process area samples was 2.5ppm. The highest individual exposure was 28.90ppm, observed in a loading operator. Engineering controls used by the facility included single mechanical seals on cumps and compressors ball valves, localized and general ventilation systems in the laboratory, vapor return lines for truck unloading, and direct connection of sample bombs to gas chromatographs in the laboratory. The authors conclude that based on company historical industrial hygiene data, the facility is a candidate for site selection for an in depth industrial hygiene survey. |
