Abstract To improve safety, economy, and efficiency of scaling in underground metal or nonmetal mines, research was conducted to develop a combination prying-hammering tool for machine scaling. In the prototype claw-hammer assembly, a hydraulic impact hammer was used to drive the claw mechanism into the rock. After a bite was established, the loose rock could be removed using a hydraulically actuated prying motion. This tool combines the advantages of both impact and ripper type scaling tools and provides versatility for use in most rock types.
