Abstract |
The report assesses the risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Volume III is part of a four-volume report, analyzing 16 PAHs; it concerns six of these: anthracene, acenaphthene, fluoranthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene. The study is part of a program to identify the sources of and evaluate exposure to 129 priority pollutants. The analysis is based on available information from government, industry, and technical publications assembled in June of 1981. The assessment includes an identification of releases to the environment during production, use, or disposal of the substances. In addition, the fate of PAHs in the environment is considered; ambient levels to which various populations of humans and aquatic life are exposed are reported. Exposure levels are estimated and available data on toxicity are presented and interpreted. Information concerning all of these topics is combined in an assessment of the risks of exposure to PAHs for various subpopulations. |
