Abstract A survey of health hazard controls in oral contraceptive tablet making (SIC-2834) operations was conducted. Four facilities were included in the survey. Engineering controls included using hoods while weighing pure steroids, local and general ventilation, material transfer systems in granulation and tablet forming operations, and using powder feed systems in tablet forming operations. Workers in granulation, tablet forming, and packaging operations were protected from exposure to steroids by respirators, coveralls, gloves, and overshoes. All facilities emphasized personal hygiene (frequent showering and changes of protective clothing). Job rotation was practiced at two facilities and good housekeeping was practiced at all facilities. The author notes that all facilities offer intensive training and education programs in health hazards, safety, and personal protective equipment associated with each job title.
