Abstract Asbestos sampling was performed at the Taft Engineering Center on February 19, 1974. The calculated time-weighted average exposure was well below National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) criteria for a recommended standard. The present U.S. Dept. of Labor (DOL) standard for asbestos exposure, adopted from NIOSH criteria, for an 8-hour time-weighted average exposure is 5 fibers, longer than 5 micrometers, per cubic centimeter of air. It is important to note that effective July 1, 1976, the DOL standard will be lowered from 5 to 2 fibers per cubic centimeter of air.
