Epoxies for Wood Repairs in Historic Buildings.

Abstract Wood consolidants and patching compounds can permit deteriorated historic woodwork to be conditioned and retained in place rather than being replaced. Such conservation 'in situ' is the philosophical basis for using epoxies in historic preservation projects. The two main types of epoxies discussed in the report are low-viscosity epoxy consolidants that can be soaked into rotted wood in order to restore its solidity; and epoxy pastes for filling holes and cracks in historic woodwork. The three basic objectives of this report are: (1) to present the results of a preliminary research and testing program on epoxy consolidants undertaken by the National Park Service; (2) to teach the reader the basic technology involved in formulating such consolidants and compounds; and (3) to provide suggested formulations and lists of suppliers so that the reader will be able to manufacture serviceable materials. Finally, several case-study applications using epoxies are presented.
