Abstract Adherence to exposure control limits has been an important strategy in the prevention of occupational disease for almost 50 years. Methods of monitoring exposure in the occupational environment are vital to this prevention strategy. They produce the information needed to modify and improve control systems so as to protect the worker from occupational health hazards. These methods are also a necessary part of all standards which set limits for environmental exposures to toxic substances. The methods presented in this improved Third Edition are intended to be accurate, clear and concise. They incorporate the results of recent research by NIOSH. Applicable methods are also incorporated into Criteria Documents produced by NIOSH for recommending standards to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
