Abstract The steel industry is considering remodelling cold strip mills for continuous operation as part of its rationalization. A fully continuous strip mill needs, at its delivery section, coiling equipment which coils the strip continuously at a high speed without impairing the quality of the strip and the productivity and operability of the rolling stands. The carrousel reel which the authors have recently developed meets such needs quite satisfactorily and eliminates many difficulties involved in the conventional coiling arrangement by two pay-off or tension reels. This paper describes the structural features of the carousel reel, an analysis of 2 N vibration peculiar to the reel shaft owing to its asymmetric rigidity, and demonstration of the developed reel shaft system on a model machine and a practical machine.
