Abstract |
A demonstration project on the feasibility and effectiveness of two management interventions, management training and organization development, for improving productivity and safety in metal-nonmetal mines was investigated. The management training intervention was conducted at Texasgulf Co.'s trona mine, using three nearby trona mines as controls. The organization development intervention took place in Hecla Mining Co.'s Lucky Friday Mine, using the highly similar Star Mine as control. The two management interventions seemed about equally effective in reducing accidents and injuries, as well as Mine Safety and Health Administration citations, and the management intervention at the Texasgulf Mine also appeared to have led to substantial improvement in mine productivity. |
