Co-Carcinogenicity of Foundry Particulates Silica and Silica Sand Substitutes. Volume 3.

PB84241991

Publication Date 1984
Page Count 430
Abstract Data from a carcinogenicity study of foundry particulates, silica (14808607) and silica sand substitutes in hamsters are presented. Results indicated that silica sand and 10 silica sand substitutes were found not to be carcinogenic when administered by intratracheal instillation to male Syrian-Golden-hamsters. When given with benzo(a)pyrene (50328), the substances showed a definite cocarcinogenic effect in the hamster respiratory system. A tumor inventory and group and individual summaries of the histopathological findings of the study are provided. Organs and tissues examined for histopathological changes are listed. Tumors observed included squamous cell carcinomas, metastatic adenocarcinomas, polyps, cortical cell adenomas and reticular cell sarcomas. Mortality data is also provided.
