National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Data supplied to NIOSH by manufacturers and distributors of hearing protective devices are presented. The name of the supplier, model, type, weight, head bend force, average attenuation values and standard deviation at test frequencies of 125 to 8000 Hertz, test standard used, and the testing laboratory are noted for 243 devices. Methods for determining the noise reduction factors for the devices are also given. The noise reduction factor is generally defined as the difference between the measured workplace noise level and the effective noise level when wearing the protective device. The performance of a given hearing protective device cannot be predicted exactly because of person and test to test variations. Three computational procedures for calculating noise reduction factors and examples of their use are described. The calculations can be performed on any electronic calculator that has logarithm and anti logarithm function buttons. Criteria for selecting the appropriate method are reviewed. Considerations in the selection and use of hearing protective devices are discussed. Important factors include proper fit, calculated noise reduction factors, durability, and whether the wearer has a need to communicate verbally.
