Abstract This is an instructor's manual for two series of lectures, the first entitled Principles of Ventilation, and the second, Ventilation Measurements. Topics in the first include: characteristics of contaminants and their sources and modes of dissemination: the types, design and operation of hoods in local exhaust systems; pressures and pressure losses in local exhaust systems; the flow of air in industrial local exhaust dust work systems; industrial ventilating fans, industrial exhaust system air cleaning devices, and methods of trouble shooting an exhaust system. Topics in the Ventilation Measurements series include: purpose of making such measurements; importance of evaluating a system in its effectiveness to control contaminants; types of systems to be measured; types of measurements to be made; the general types of instruments used; the use of the pitot tube to measure air flow; various air meters; how to make measurements of air velocity at hood openings; practical methods of measuring general ventilation; criteria on standards and good practice for industrial ventilation. Laboratory exercises for ventilation measurements are provided.
