Abstract This profile, Overview of Electrical Mechanical Lockout Devices, has identified three devices suitable for lockout of electrical or mechanical systems. These are identified as padlocks, hasp type multipadlock adaptors and pin type adaptor. Equipment such as electric disconnect switches and valves with self-contained locking capacity was not investigated. A review of lockout requirement was made. There are three types of situations where lockouts or isolation systems are involved for hazard reduction. The first is locking out to prevent movement or motion. This most commonly involves electrically powered equipment, but does include hydraulic, pneumatic, steam and other power sources. Secondly, lockouts are used to prevent hazardous atmospheric generation, most commonly encountered confined space work, including gases, temperature and pressure. Third, lockouts are used to preclude exposure to electrical currents.
