Abstract A safety information profile is presented for heavy concrete and masonry construction, excluding highway construction (Standard Industrial Classification 162, subdivisions 1622, 1623, 1629). A description of the basic process is given. Potential health, safety, and physical hazards are discussed. Current controls are detailed. Graphs of accident and illness statistics by type of construction are presented, along with a brief discussion. Industry growth trends are mentioned. Existing federal and state standards are described, and the clarification and consolidation of OSHA regulations are recommended. Names and addresses of industry associations, unions, and other interested parties are provided. It is concluded that the accident rate for this industry is high, and the major accident categories are 'struck by or against,' 'strain or overexertion,' and 'falls.' However, it is stressed that much data are either unavailable or outdated. More extensive engineering controls, such as guardrials and barriers, are recommended, as well as the use of hard hats and other protective equipment, and personnel training in the use of machinery and equipment. Further study is suggeested to collect revise industry safety data.
