Abstract |
A safety information profile is presented for turnaround operations in the petroleum (8002059) refining industry (Standard Industrial Classification 291). Turnaround procedures are described. Potential safety hazards are listed along with chemicals to which a worker might be exposed. Existing hazard controls for specific work tasks are cited, and accident and illness statistics are summarized. Related studies are mentioned. Industry growth trends are discussed. Federal and supplemental standards are outlined, and a list of names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties is provided. It is concluded that data are insufficient to fully evaluate safety and health hazards associated with turnaround operations, and that hazard control primarily is a factor of adherence to established work practices. Further study of turnaround operations is recommended to determine appropriate safety and hygiene standards. |
