Abstract	NIOSH conducted an initial survey on June 10-12, 1980, and a follow-up survey on January 26-28, 1981. NIOSH recommends a ceiling of 1 ppm for benzene. Medical interviews determined that employees reported headaches, nausea, and dry skin when pulling parison (plastic) from the extruder heads, especially when they had to do so for more than 15 minutes at a time. The association of symptoms with the pulling of parison suggests that the volatilized organotins, along with other decomposition products (i.e., coloring agents, HCl), at the extruder head are the cause of the symptoms, which are not reported when the packers are at their normal work station.
